The Practice

Dr. Jonathan Vapnek is Board-Certified and has practiced in New York for over ten years. Every year since 2000, New York Magazine has named Dr. Vapnek one of NYC’s Best Urologists.

While Dr. Vapnek’s practice includes all of the urological disorders found in most urology practices, including benign prostatic enlargement, prostate cancer, kidney stones and urinary tract infections, his recognized areas of expertise are urinary incontinence, neuro-urology, urodynamics and female urology. Many of his patients have problems with urinary incontinence or bladder control problems from neurological disorders such as spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis.

Dr. Vapnek’s office is equipped with a state-of-the-art urodynamics laboratory, and unlike many practices, he performs these studies himself, rather than delegating it to an assistant with far less training and expertise – a practice common in many other offices. Dr. Vapnek’s office is easily accessible to those with disabilities, so that patients with spinal cord injuries and others in wheelchairs may also have full access to the facilities. When procedures cannot be carried out in the office setting, he has privileges at Mt. Sinai hospital, with a fully-equipped cystoscopy suite with fluoroscopy along with state-of-the-art operating rooms.

Training
Dr. Vapnek received his BS from Yale University, summa cum laude and his MD at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. He completed his urology residency at the University of California, San Francisco, then pursued a Fellowship in Neurourology, Urodynamics and Reconstructive Urology with Anthony Stone at the University of California, Davis. In New York, Dr. Vapnek achieved the rank of Clinical Associate Professor at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. He also served as an attending physician at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in the Bronx, where he was responsible for the urological care of the spinal cord injury unit.

Memberships
Dr. Vapnek is a member of many professional societies and has served on many committees. He is currently a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Urological Association, the New York Section of the AUA, the American Paraplegia Society, the American Spinal Injury Association, the Society for Urodynamics and Female Urology, and the New York Academy of Medicine. He is also called upon frequently as a peer reviewer for academic literature in the areas of Spinal Cord Research, Neuro-Urology and Urinary Incontinence.

Publications
He has published extensively in the urological literature, having authored or co-authored more than 35 papers, and having made over 75 academic presentations at local, national and international meetings. He has been awarded many honors, including being voted one of “New York’s best doctors” by New York magazine in 5 of the last 6 years.

Practice Philosophy
Dr. Vapnek believes that every patient deserves the highest level of personal care. For that reason, each and every patient is examined and treated only by Dr. Vapnek, never by a nurse or a physician extender. Not only on the initial consultation, but on every follow-up visit, including procedures. He believes in giving his patients the best care possible, without cutting corners or using “shortcuts.” While other physicians blame managed care for their inability to spend more time with patients, Dr. Vapnek still believes that medical care is a very personal matter, and every patient is given all the time that he or she needs.

In addition, Dr. Vapnek has a caring office staff who believe that the patient always comes first. The office staff will do whatever they can to make your visit as pleasant and unhurried as possible, and they will also do their best to handle any special requests. In the end, our own success is measured by patient satisfaction.
